Review by Samantha Dunn
The sub-title of this book is ‘How today’s false gods rob of us of real life’. The book is a great reminder of the challenge of living ‘in a society that is apparently devoted to everything BUT God’. And with great insight and strong Biblical teaching (and really interesting and relevant illustrations) the book takes you on a journey looking at false gods from self-esteem and personal independence, to career and financial success, to popular culture and how we entertain ourselves AND, perhaps surprisingly, it’s not a guilt-trip. It’s an encouragement. The author sets out to remind the reader of all that Jesus has done and asked of us - to remind us of the real goal of our lives (to glorify God and enjoy him forever). I found being reminded of all I have been and will be given, switches the focus away from all I am called to ‘give up’. We worship the God who gives us real-life. The rest is smoke and mirrors. What freedom that knowledge brings. For a practical guide to living as a Christian in our city, I can’t go past this book.
