Jonathan Edwards was an 18th century pastor. He said: “nothing significant ever changed the life of anyone when the heart was not deeply affected.” Edwards encouraged us to look at the affections of our hearts (love, hate, compassion, zeal, gratitude, sorrow, desire, joy, etc) to see if our affections are rooted in God. He urges us to “do as much as possible to stimulate the affections”. He issues a strong challenge that many of us need to hear: “We are nothing if we are not earnest about our faith. The religious life contains things too great for us to be lukewarm”.
